LANSING — A white steel girder adorned with an American flag and a tiny evergreen tree was hoisted into position Tuesday during a “topping out” ceremony at the Lansing Board of Water & Light’s REO Town build site.
The girder is among the last of the 4,130 pieces of fabricated steel to go up at the site of BWL’s new cogeneration plant and headquarters facility on South Washington Avenue in Lansing’s REO Town district. It is inscribed with the signatures of BWL employees and will be visible from inside the facility when it opens next year.
The $182 million plant — BWL’s first gas-fired steam and electric generation facility — is on budget and on track for a July 2013 opening, said BWL General Manager J. Peter Lark.
He and Mayor Virg Bernero heralded the project as an economic boon for the area, saying it will spark new investment along the South Washington corridor.
Officials from Christman Co. and the Lansing Building Trades union also spoke during the 30-minute ceremony.
