Lansing, MI – November 12, 2010 – Lansing-based Kramer Management Group has recently been awarded a professional services contract to provide Owner's Representative Services for the Lansing Board of Water and Light's $182 million Cogeneration Power and Steam plant in Lansing's REO Town. The project allows for the de-commissioning of the aging Moores Park Steam plant, while providing new steam services for 225 downtown Lansing customers, and 110 MW of new electric power generation capabilities. The new power plant will burn natural gas instead of coal and will result in a 90% reduction in emissions following the decommissioning of the aging facilities being replaced by this new plant. This project is also recognized for providing new energy for the redevelopment efforts in Lansing's REO town.
In addition to the new power generating facilities, the BWL will relocate approximately 180 workers to REO Town, and will adaptively re-use the Grand Trunk Western Railroad Depot. Work is planned to begin in the 3rd quarter 2011, and will provide for over 600 construction trade jobs. Kramer Management Group will assist the BWL with the project planning, program management, and construction oversight for the project. As part of its plans to build a $182 million cogeneration facility, the BWL intends to restore the historic Grand Trunk railroad depot and make it a community meeting place. This state-of-the-art facility will be the BWL's first venture into cogeneration. "Cogeneration" means we will use one fuel - natural gas - to produce both electricity and steam for our Proposed cogeneration facility customers.
During the building phase of the project, more than 1,000 construction jobs will be created. When the facility goes online in 2013, it will house 180 BWL employees. Kramer adds, "This project will have a profound impact on the City of Lansing over the next 50 years, and Kramer Management Group will take great care to represent the best interests of the BWL and the City of Lansing." The cogeneration facility will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent, compared to the coal fired plant it replaces. By switching to natural gas, the BWL will avoid burning 139,000 tons of coal each year. The BWL intends to make the facility "LEED-certified" through environment-friendly design operation.
